MNRE gives vehicle check-up discounts as New Year gift

BANGKOK (NNT) – As part of the attempt to reduce air pollution, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has introduced a vehicle check-up discount campaign, encouraging drivers to take their vehicles for a check-up at a special price.

The Ministry has joined forces with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and eight car brands to launch a New Year vehicle check-up discount campaign, in an effort to curb traffic emissions which are a major contributor to air pollution.

In this campaign, participating manufacturers and garages will provide discounts on vehicle check-ups and maintenance, such as a motor oil change, new oil and air filters, as well as discounts on parts and motor oil.

Emissions from vehicles are considered a major factor in air pollution and PM 2.5 airborne particulate matter accumulation in urban areas, especially exhaust fumes from old engines, particularly diesel engines aged more than 10 years, and engines that have not been properly maintained.

There is currently no law on the age restriction of vehicles on the road, resulting in many old, poorly maintained vehicles still in operation every day.

The Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Varawut Silpa-archa said today that members of the public can get discounted services at participating vehicle service centers, while stressing that cooperation by the general public is required to successfully solve the PM 2.5 haze disaster.

A representative of the FTI added that the federation has asked for the cooperation of the automotive industry, encouraging its participation in solving the air pollution issue.
