Songkhla Special Task Force seizes 50 rai of forest area

BANGKOK, 14 MAY 2019 (NNT) – As for the suppression of the deforestation movement, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4, Forward, led the authorities to seize 10 forest areas in the upstream forest area in the National Forest Reserve, San Kalakiri mountain range. It was found that almost 50 rai of forest area had been destroyed.

Songkhla Special Task Force has cooperated with a special working group of the ISOC, Region 4, Forward and the Royal Forest Department’s officials to inspect the forest areas in the upstream forest reserve area, permanent forests and national forest reserves of Khao Dan, Khuan Chedi, Khao Phraya Mai, Khuan Kamphaeng, Khuan Rasau and Khao Toh Thep and Khuan Hin Lap forest. They are virgin forests adjacent to San Kalakiri National Park, Thai-Malaysian border. The operation was launched after the Anothai Adhoc Unit conducted an aerial survey and found more deforestation in many areas of Saba Yoi district, Songkhla province.

The inspection of the target areas including Thepha Canal upstream area, Khao Daeng subdistrict, Bahoy subdistrict and Thung Pho subdistrict in Saba Yoi district found a total of 10 newly destroyed forest areas covering a total area of nearly 50 rai. In some areas, valuable woods were found to have been felled by a chain saw. Newly grown durians were also found in some areas but the offenders were not found. The authorities have seized the forest area and will track down the offenders in order to prosecute them.
