‘Game of Thrones’ Makers Turn to Iconic Chinese Sci-Fi

“3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of a Chinese sci-fi trilogy by the creators of “Game of Thrones,” premieres at SXSW before launching on Netflix. Showrunners promise new challenges and a global threat storyline.

The highly anticipated adaptation of the iconic Chinese sci-fi trilogy “3 Body Problem” by the makers of “Game of Thrones” is set to premiere at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas this weekend. The show will later launch on Netflix on March 21. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have taken inspiration from the books by Liu Cixin, which have already been adapted for Chinese TV. The trilogy, starting with “The Three-Body Problem” in 2008, explores existential threats faced by Earth through shifting countries, eras, and protagonists.

The team behind “Game of Thrones” is excited to present a new set of challenges with “3 Body Problem” after spending a decade in the fictional world of Westeros. The show features a core group of characters facing an impending threat, played by actors such as John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, and Jonathan Pryce, all known from their roles in “Game of Thrones.” The show was shot across multiple locations, including England, Spain, the United Nations headquarters, and Cape Canaveral, in just nine months to capture its grandiose and polished style.

Reflecting on current global challenges like climate change and the pandemic, Weiss noted the resonance of “3 Body Problem” with audiences today. The series showcases a variety of reactions to a global threat, mirroring the diverse responses seen in real life. By revisiting familiar crew members and composer Ramin Djawadi, the showrunners aim to deliver a visually stunning and emotionally engaging narrative that will captivate audiences around the world.
