BANGKOK(NNT) – The Pollution Control Department’s Director General, Pralong Dumrongthai has revealed the amount of PM2.5 airborne particulate matter measured in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces on February 25, ranges from 54 to 88 micrograms per cubic meter, with 62 locations having an Orange alert indiciating unhealthy air quality.
The highest concentrations of PM 2.5 dust today were recorded in Aom Noi subdistrict of Samut Sakhon, Pak Nam subdistrict of Samut Prakan, Bang Sao Thong subdistrict of Samut Prakan, by Nawamin Road in Bang Kapi district of Bangkok, Khlong Sam Wa district of Bangkok, Khlong Toei district of Bangkok, and Lat Krabang district of Bangkok.
The PCD chief said still air in many locations is favourable for the accumulation of the dust, while heavy road traffic has also contributed to higher air pollution. The general public is encouraged to use public transport instead of private vehicles, during this period of high air pollution.
In the northern region, the PM 2.5 level was measured between 45 to 125 micrograms per cubic meter today, while the PM 10 level was measured between 60 to 139. The figures show generally higher air pollution than yesterday. The air quality today at Chong Kham subdistrict of Mae Hong Son has activated a very unhealthy red alert, while 12 areas today have generated orange unhealthy alerts, due to outdoor burn-offs of vegetation.
Villagers are asked to cooperate by refraining from setting fires outdoors or in the forest, and to report any outdoor or forest burning by others, by calling the 1362 hotline.
