Thailand has seen a boost in its tourism sector with one million Chinese tourists visiting the country in the first 4.5 months of 2023. This is considered a sign of recovery for the industry, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, Thailand received 11 million Chinese tourists which represented 28% of all foreign arrivals but only 274,000 Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2022 due to travel restrictions and quarantine measures. The government spokesperson predicts that the number of Chinese visitors is expected to reach five million by the end of 2023. Thailand’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism for income and employment, and the country’s GDP rose by 4.2% in Q1 2023 due to the rebound in tourism and domestic demand.
