LAMPANG(NNT) – In an attempt to improve the efficiency of electricity generation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has joined hands with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Marubeni to implement Japanese digital technology to improve the operations at Mae Mo Power Plant units 11 and 13 in Lampang.
This cooperation is supported by the Japanese government to find digital solutions in both hardware and software to maximize the efficiency of power plant operations and maintenance, as well as reducing operational costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This will help increase the plant’s competitiveness and improve national energy security.
EGAT’s Deputy Governor Nutthavutthi Chamchang said units number 11 and 13 at Mae Mo power plant currency have a capacity of 300 megawatt each. The units use lignite as fuel, sourced from a local mine. The implementation of new technologies will help the plants operate more efficiently, reduce maintenance costs, and reduce 14,000 tons of carbondioxide emission each year.
A new analysis system will also be implemented to calculate financial worthiness, risks and production opportunities.
This is part of NEDO’s project to facilitate private-sector-led promotion of low-carbon technology overseas, in cooperation with Marubeni. The Thai government is determined to reduce carbon emissions, in compliance with the Paris Agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, one of the efforts is the refurbishment of existing power plants.
