A second Iranian cargo ship, the Jairan, is en route to Iran after reportedly departing China with a significant cargo. This ship is associated with an alleged scheme to import sodium perchlorate, an ingredient for missile propellant, as outlined by various Western news outlets. The Jairan’s departure came a month later than expected, amidst scrutiny regarding its potential role in Iran’s missile capabilities.
The Jairan, alongside another vessel named Golbon, has been linked to transporting sodium perchlorate, which could potentially be converted into a component for over 250 midrange missiles. Both ships are sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for their involvement with the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.
As the Jairan travels towards Bandar Abbas, Iranian officials and the U.S. State Department have not commented on the shipment. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities maintain their focus on adhering to export controls while rejecting foreign-imposed sanctions. Observers speculate that Iran’s cautious approach may be linked to the risks posed by U.S. interception of vessels associated with sensitive materials.
