China exerting ‘unacceptable’ control of canal

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Panama’s leaders about China’s influence over the Panama Canal, calling it a threat, while Panamanian officials rejected U.S. demands for ownership negotiations. Protests ensued.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concerns about China’s growing influence over the Panama Canal, labeling it “unacceptable” during his meeting with Panamanian leaders. He warned that if this situation continues, the U.S. might need to take necessary measures to secure access to the vital waterway, which is crucial for international trade.

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino firmly rejected U.S. criticisms regarding canal management, emphasizing that the canal, handed over to Panama in 1999, will not be a subject of negotiation. Protests erupted in Panama City against Rubio’s comments, with demonstrators advocating for national sovereignty.

Rubio’s visit also addressed issues concerning illegal migration in the region. His agenda includes discussions with leaders from several Central American countries to enhance cooperation on migration, counter transnational crime, and foster economic partnerships while countering China’s influence in Latin America.
